There are obviously hundred of softwares that support converting audios file on Mac. However, you might not know yet we can easily Convert Mp4 to Mp3 using iTunes in Mac OS X in seconds.

Convert MP4 to MP3 using iTunes

My context is just one little tiny peace of life. The audio player system in My new CRV Car is able to play just MP3 songs from USB Flash drive.

I have a huge collection of music in my iTunes library, but almost songs is in MP4 format. I finally found out a quick way to convert MP4 to MP3 using exact my iTunes.

The following instruction may help to convert MP4 to other audio formats such as WAV, AAC,… you should try it your-self.

Convert MP4 to MP3 in iTunes library

1. Go iTunes preferences > General > click on ‘Import Settings’ at the bottom > Choose MP3 encoder at Import using and MP3 quality at Setting > click on OK.

2. Highlight MP4 file you want to convert and then click “create MP3 version”. This will create a .mp3 version while the original .mp4 file will still be there.

You get the job done very conveniently without using any external converter softwares.

Thanks so much for your post. I have 10.10.5 and iTunes 12.5.5.5. I followed your instructions but when I go to File, Convert, the choice for MP3 is greyed out. I exited itunes and retried it with the same result…

Try exporting the audio from Quicktime to .m4a. Then from iTunes the option to convert to .mp3 will be available.

Thanks so much for the tip. I ended up opening the file in Audacity and converting it that way. I’ve been using Audacity for years, it is a simple audio editing software. And I think it is free.

Let’s be honest. Either this method of MP4 to MP3 conversion:

      1) Does not work, or
      2) I’m an idiot (maybe most likely) , or
      3) may have worked at some time previously, but doesn’t work with newer iTunes versions

I’ve been to the Apple support forums…and was provided with other methods (Quicktime for example) that were also dead ends. My iSoft iTube Studio software doesn’t seem to be able to extract the MP3 from an MP4 or other Youtube video anymore unless that video has already been downloaded as MP3 by me or is not a music video. Weird. What changed??? I’ll try Audacity.
